The business unit ended 2016 with a 40% increase in driver safety; In 2017, it expects to achieve a 50% improvement on its 2016 figure; The target for the next five years is to reduce incidents to practically zero

Sao Paulo, November 22, 2017 – JBS Transportadora has just announced it is investing in real-time monitoring technology to increase fleet safety by 50% in 2017. Known as telemetry, this smart system controls driver performance and will help reduce operating costs, as well as the number of traffic fines. The system will be installed on all 1,100 trucks in the business unit’s fleet by the end of the year.

The technology can be operated by mobile phone or satellite and will change how safety issues are addressed during driver training, as it offers online and remote tracking during trips. “Beyond just monitoring, we want to see how drivers perform, discover what can be improved and take steps to increase safety and reduce accidents”, said Ricardo Gelain, director at JBS Transportadora.

The entire system can be monitored from the business unit’s tracking center and can take action during trips if a violation occurs (sharp braking, aggressive driving, etc.) to improve driver performance. The company expects to reduce the number of incidents to almost zero within five years.

JBS Transportadora increased its focus on safety and performance in 2016, when it invested in defensive driving courses. This led to a 40% increase in fleet safety on Brazil’s highways by the end of the year. “We don’t want to be the fastest on the market. We want to arrive on time, safely and with our cargo intact. Telemetry is just another tool that will help us achieve this”, said Gelain.

Predictive maintenance
Next year, the business unit will use the information gathered through telemetry to anticipate possible mechanical problems affecting its trucks – predictive maintenance, which generates savings and helps reduce wastage, cuts lost productivity and extends trucks’ working life.

Today, around 5% of the JBS Transportadora fleet is currently off the road for servicing. Using predictive maintenance, the company hopes to reduce this to 3%. “This means we will be able to carry more cargo with the same number of trucks”, said Gelain.
